2022 fashion reload: A look back on all the events that took place in the fashion world

2022 has been filled with a handful of events that shook the fashion world. From award shows, fashion week events and Halloween costumes, we can all agree that this year has been quite memorable when it comes to fashion. However, we are sure that with all of these events taking place throughout the year, that some of them may have been forgotten, especially those that took place right at the beginning of the year. We want to give you a fashion reload which will help jog your memory.

January:

Due to unfortunate events 2022 started off with some sad moments due to the passing of two individuals who had a huge impact on the industry. André Leon Talley’s death was the first shock of the month. The former Vogue editor died at age 73, he was a man of profound fashion who loved extravagant capes and was friends with many designers across the world from Karl Lagerfeld to Tom Ford. Throughout January his legacy was celebrated by many in the industry. In the later days of the month another legend passed away. The French designer Manfred Thierry Mugler was the creative director and creative adviser of Mugler which was launched in the 1970’s. His hard work and footprint will continue to be remembered.

February:

February kicked off the new season for Autumn/Winner 22 with multiple fashion weeks taking place all across the world from New York to Tokyo. Each brand used these weeks to showcase their new collections for the autumn and winter season of this year. Trends such as bright fuchsia pinks, baby doll dresses and any type of knitwear all took centre stage at various fashion weeks during February.

March:

March gave us a number of awards shows. The Oscars were smooth sailing and so was its British sister award show the BAFTAs. On the red-carpet Hollywood's best were dressed in designer clothes like Chanel and Versace. Zoë Kravitz wore a soft baby pink dress with a delicate bow designed by Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vaccarello. This look was paired with Kwiat jewellery. Zendaya attended the show with beauty and elegance in a silver sequin skirt with an ivory satin crop shirt from Valentino with Bulgari Viper double-coil bracelets. But Zendaya was not the only one pulling out all the stops that month. A heavily pregnant Rihanna stole the show during the Dior segment at Paris fashion week. Dressed in all black lingerie accessorised with chunky silver jewellery, knee high boots and a long leather trench coat which was often draped on her shoulders. Once again, she has shown us all that she is an absolute fashion icon.

April:

The festive season began with one of the largest and most known festivals in the world. Coachella gave us bright colours and various festival trends. These trends included bohemian frills, low rise skirts and bikini tops. Celebrities and influences such as Paris Hilton and Kendall Jenner showed up to have fun in the Californian sun.

May:

The glitz and glamour was brought to us in many forms in May. From the annual Cannes Film Festival and the biggest fashion moment of the year, the Met Gala. The Cannes festival gave us bold elements from celebrities such as Naomi Campbell who was dressed in an all-black plunge neckline feathered gown from Valentino. Winnie Harlow gave us a Cinderella moment at the screening of ‘Elvis’ in a strapless blue gown with a tulle skirt from Off-White’s Autumn Winter 2022 collection. The Met Gala gave us the opportunity to explore the theme of Gilded Glamour. Billie Eilish partnered with Gucci to create a custom ivory and satin corset gown which was paired with green lace underlay and an ivory satin skirt. Kim Kardashian attended the event in the 1962 Marilyn Monroe “happy birthday, Mr President dress. We can all agree that we are looking forward to this year's Met and what it has installed for us.

June:

Another month filled with multiple events. The BET awards gave us the best from the RnB and Hip-Hop industry. Beyonce revealed her latest issue with Vogue which coincided with her new disco- pop and house music album, Renaissance, which is her seventh album. This issue was focused on this album and the imagery definitely did so. Beyonce can be pictured in multiple outfits. One being an extravagant gold embroidered coat with sequins paired with Swarovski rhinestones. And in another, she can be seen sitting on a sizable disco ball in a silk corset with sequined leggings and lace embellished boots.

July:

Summer had arrived and so had the summer fashion trends. Even though these trends were first displayed to us during the Spring/Summer 22 fashion weeks during September of last year, these trends were in full force during the month of July. Trends such as cut out tops, trousers, anything you can think of, was the driving force behind most individuals' outfits. And the Ultra-mini trend, taking inspiration from the Y2K aesthetic, cannot be forgotten. We can all agree that this trend is definitely here to stay for a little longer. It will be exciting to see what trends will be predicted for this summer.

August:

August saw the death of yet another fashion icon Issey Miyake, who sadly passed away at the age of 84. The Japanese fashion designer was well known for his technological driven clothing designs, exhibitions and fragrances. His work will never be forgotten, and many paid their respects.

September:

The Fashion week period took place again for the second time this year, but London Fashion Week was affected by the sad news of the passing of Her majesty, Queen Elizabeth the second. Many designers such as Burberry did their best to respect the period of morning in the UK. Celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian and Naomi Campbell paired up with the likes of Balenciaga and Versace. The event that we know will never be forget from September was The Coperni show, which gave us the opportunity to explore new technological advancements in the fashion industry. The French fashion brand used sprayable, liquid Fabric to spray a dress onto model Bella Hadid at the Spring Summer 2023 show at Paris Fashion. This event will definitely go down in fashion history.

October:

This Halloween season gave us a world of costumes from famous characters to scary figures, but it can definitely be said that everyone brought their A-game. Kendall Jenner was Jesse the Cowgirl from Toy Story. Janelle Monáe dressed up as a very realistic opera singing alien from the film, The Fifth Element. Doesn't she look amazing? Halloween wasn't the event that was providing the looks. The purple carpet was back again for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premiere which saw celebrities such as Rihanna, Michael B Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o and Angela Bassett come to celebrate the release of the much-anticipated film.

November:

November was a very rocky month for one of the Kering group's well-known brands, Balenciaga. The controversy began after the brand released their new ‘Gift Collection’ holiday campaign which featured imagery of children holding teddy bears which were dressed in BDSM fetishwear. The brand faced immediate backlash, the public were in uproar, and many began to boycott the brand. The event also led to their Creative Director, Demna Gvasalia to lose his Global Voices Award given to him at the start of the year by The Business of Fashion. This is a huge deal for the brand and the Kering Group, let see what moves they will make in order to bring themselves back from these fundamental mistakes.

December:

Twas the season for celebration as the festive season approached. We saw many celebrities celebrating the season in their best festive wear. The Kardashian-Jenner women once again stole the show at their annual Christmas party. When thinking about December we can forget the last fashion event of the year, The Fashion Awards. Held at the Royal Albert Hall, in London, key fashion individuals such as Naomi Campbell and Edward Enninful came together to celebrate the industry and all those who contribute to it. The event also focused on changes to the industry which have been a heavy driving force this year. But the main question is, what was everyone wearing?

Stormzy showed up to the red carpet in Burberry wearing an all-black suit and long scarf, a very simple but effective outfit. Partnered with Gucci, Jodie Turner-Smith wore a beautiful chartreuse jewelled neckline dress, which was lined with intricate ruffles to create a free-flowing gown. The end of 2022 gave us some very upsetting news with the death of the fashion icon Vivienne Westwood. We continue to morn this great loss in the industry.

2022 was a storm full of highs and lows for the industry. It can definitely be said that last year was a really memorable. We cannot wait to see what 2023 has in store for us.
